What is email marketing?

Email marketing is the practice of sending commercial messages to a targeted audience via email. It entails utilizing email to distribute advertisements, seek business, or ask for sales or donations using email.

Types of emails in email marketing

Transactional emails
Transactional emails are generally activated by a consumer’s action with a firm. These communications must have the primary goal of “to facilitate, complete, or confirm a commercial transaction that the recipient has previously agreed to enter into with the sender” and other restrictive criteria in order to be considered transactional or relationship messages.

Triggered transactional emails include abandoned cart notifications, password reset emails, purchase or order confirmation emails, order status communications, reorder communications, and email receipts.

Direct emails
Sending an email only to deliver a promotional message, as opposed to communicating information or selling anything, is referred to as direct email. To spread marketing messages directly to consumers or prospects, businesses generally buy a list of email addresses from service companies or gather their own.

Advantages of email marketing

Many businesses utilize email marketing for a variety of reasons:

  • Email marketing is far more cost-effective and quicker than regular mail since the majority of the expense is absorbed by the recipient.
  • Email marketing insights allow businesses and organizations to understand and take advantage of consumer behavior by using an ESP (email service provider). Businesses and organizations can utilize consumer response to email marketing information to better understand and leverage consumer behavior.
  • 50% of American Internet users check or send an email on a regular basis, with emails sent between 1 am and 5 am local time outscoring those sent at other times in terms of open and click rates.
