Squarespace Reviews: Why They Love or Hate Squarespace

10 min read

We have a confession. One of the stranger hobbies we have is checking out reviews.

It’s almost like having your own personal Lady Whistledown. Keeping on top of reviews allows us to keep an eye out for what’s trending and what’s not so trending. This allows us to keep our customers in mind by either emulating success stories, or taking tips from those that weren’t so successful. It’s also just a fun way to pass time, because you never know what interesting things the general populace will have to say.

So today, we’re sharing our hobby to help you make the best decision you can about where to platform your ecommerce website. Or, maybe you’re like us and just like to read reviews. So put on some comfy clothes, get a nice snack and a warm drink, and let’s dive right into the reviews on Squarespace.

Initial Impressions

As with any business, it is incredibly important to understand your public and what gets them going.

Squarespace is a reputable company, and as it goes to show with any expansion of renown, the larger a company gets, the greater the chance becomes for it to be subject to scrutiny. It’s like a large building, structure, monument, landmark—or whatever example floats your boat, even if it’s a boat. The larger it gets, the more eyes will begin to take notice of it.

The more eyes that begin to notice, the more reactions the company is going to get. As an inherent part of consumer nature, everybody loves a chance to put in their two cents. These opinions, or reviews, can dictate the course of a business and inevitably shape its future success, depending on the trends on consumer reviews. So without further ado, let’s get into some genuine reviews from your fellow consumer.

Why They Seem to Love It

While only a few examples of Squarespace reviews sit above, it isn’t hard to already detect a trend. Squarespace offers simplicity and is incredibly inviting. Their website offers the initial tools that any business will need to get started. This, alongside a relatively comprehensive editing package, allows for a simple area for new business or site owners to set up shop and get the ball rolling.

Robert Brandl of ToolTester

Here is a segment from Robert Brandl’s more focused review on Squarespace as a whole:

“The rather complicated editing interface used to be a major sticking point in the past. Fortunately, this has been improved in more recent versions. Although still not perfect, the site builder now allows for real point and click interaction. This speeds up your website building efforts and lets you avoid unpleasant surprises.

There’s also been a shift towards providing a greater range of tools and add-ons, including the recently-introduced Members Areas, Squarespace Scheduling, and Email Campaigns. These, on top of existing features such as ecommerce and podcast support, demonstrate Squarespace’s goal to position itself beyond the realm of portfolios and personal sites, towards being a complete, all-in-one business platform.”

Robert of ToolTester’s final rating: four stars

Needless to say, this is worlds apart from our first example. This is a smaller segment pulled from an article, yet unlike the first example we posted, the depth explored was greater and more detailed. And, it was concluded with an overall positive rating. What kinds of features went into this pleasant review—and what prevented them from offering an overall rating of five stars?

For starters, a similar trend seems to be surfacing in regards to Squarespace’s customer support. This review mentions how it can be frustrating to get effective guidance and assistance with issues with the company’s interface, let alone getting ahold of someone amidst a sea of callers. Other aspects that gave them a less than perfect score were mentions of ease of use of their website and how limiting options for consumers can be.

It isn’t hard to see that Squarespace certainly bolsters an attractive initial interface, especially upon visiting their website. Everything feels clean, simple, sleak, and streamlined—which can easily bring newcomers in. It is relatively easy to set up, but with this comes a lack of depth that many larger businesses might be desiring. There are complications that arise with the site editor, and few options in regards to establishing hierarchical sites.

Squarespace offers simplicity at the sacrifice of nuance and advanced user functionality. They even lack tools to easily provide multilingual interaction, which can easily prove to be an obstacle for any company seeking to use their platform.

Why They Seem to Hate It

Despite such an easy and attractive style on the surface, much of what makes Squarespace a worthwhile option for many incoming business owners. As it goes to show, a not-so-stellar customer support line will leave a consumer feeling neglected and like they don’t really matter. While they are not technically a part of the main branch of the company, nothing feels worse than feeling like you’re left at sea in the event that an error should arise.

Ironically, their “ease of use” acts as a double-edged sword. While it is simple to get started, this surface-level attraction starts to fall short once a company hits a certain size or develops enough needs that simply cannot be satisfied any longer. This is an instance that pushing for “simplicity” can easily turn into “limiting” instead.

Christopher of Trustpilot

Christopher of Trustpilot had some strong words in his Squarespace review. Titled Horrible Business Practices, he wrote:

“I was impressed at there pricing and what they offered. However, there support is horrible. You email them and you get no answer. I decided to end my subscription after one day with them and they took my money and will not give me a refund. That’s wrong!!! If this happens to you file a complaint with the BBB and the NY attorney general’s office. They should not be allowed to just take people’s money and run. Bad company BEWARE!!!!! Take your business to”

Christopher of Trustpilot’s final rating: one star

We’re starting out with a passionate one, and it’s needless to say that there aren’t any punches pulled in this one. It doesn’t take any investigation to mark this as an example of a disgruntled customer. Instead of just chalking it up to a bad mood or rare occurrence, however, let’s take a look at some of the things that went into the review to get them here.

The main complaint of this review has to do with their experience interacting with Squarespace’s support center. Customer relations is a massive aspect of every company—and it can, in many cases, be the deciding factor on the quality of a consumer’s personal experience. While the main focus of these companies is to conduct business, there is no more important business than making sure your customer feels cared for.

Here we have an explicit example of how things can go if a customer feels neglected. Enough of these cases, and a company’s reputation could spread rapidly—and not for the better.

All In All

All in all, Squarespace certainly isn’t just another hole in the wall. As we’ve seen, they seem to elicit quite a strong emotional response. There seem to be mixed customer reviews, ranging from rage to absolute bliss. While a polarity like this might be a bit questionable at first, this level of a diverse reaction is actually good. A company should always be improving, because with an ever changing market also means an ever changing customer.

Let this be your call to action! Review companies honestly, even when you don’t have extreme feelings for them. In fact, companies generally get the best feedback from customers who have simply had a middle-of-the-road experience. You can only hurt their progress by avoiding a clear and genuine reaction, so give them the most so they can give you the most.

So simple to use – even my most technophobic clients can manage. Easy to install, quick to set up. Light years ahead of other shop plugins.
I’m so impressed I’ve recommended it to my website clients and am now using it for my own store along with four others for which I webmaster. Beautiful coding, excellent top-notch support, great documentation, fantastic how-to videos. Thank you so much Ecwid, you rock!
I’ve used Ecwid and I love the platform itself. Everything is so simplified it’s insane. I love how you have different options to choose shipping carriers, to be able to put in so many different variants. It’s a pretty open e-commerce gateway.
Easy to use, affordable (and a free option if starting off). Looks professional, many templates to select from. The App is my favorite feature as I can manage my store right from my phone. Highly recommended 👌👍
I like that Ecwid was easy to start and to use. Even for a person like me, without any technical background. Very well written help articles. And the support team is the best for my opinion.
For everything it has to offer, ECWID is incredibly easy to set up. Highly recommend! I did a lot of research and tried about 3 other competitors. Just try ECWID and you'll be online in no time.
