Stock Availability - order on request

When I have no stock of a product the cart says 'out of stock' and the customer cannot place an order. This is fine for some products, but I would like the option of a message saying the item can be 'ordered on request'. In this case the customer can still place the order and I can email him with an expected lead time for the product (if he has not already confirmed this prior to placing an order).

Is there a way of achieving this requirement?

Currently, the 'out of stock' products in Ecwid cannot be ordered by customers. It is a part of inventory tracking functionality in Ecwid, which helps store owners to keep an eye on their sales and goods. There is also an ability to hide out-of-stock products in storefront. To do it you should tick the 'Hide out of stock products' checkbox in your store settings in Ecwid control panel (System settings → General → Cart).

In your case I can offer the following workaround. If you have an out-of-stock product in your Ecwid store and know when it is coming back in stock, then you can inform your customer of it by adding this info in a product description. This way they will know when to visit your store again for purchasing a product.
Another possible workaround is to set unlimited quantity for a product and let a customer buy it (with informing them in the product description, that the product is on backorder). This will allow customers to add any product to the cart and place an order. Please note, that since in this case some purchased products may be out of stock, they will be delivered with delay, thus your customer should be clearly informed of it.

I also want to inform you that an idea of implementing ability to pre-order out-of-stock products was suggested by one of Ecwid users in the 'Ideas for Ecwid':

If you want it to be implemented sooner, please feel free to vote for the idea on that page.
