How can I effectively set up a promotion for BUY 1 item at full price, and get another item for 50% off. I was not able to figure it out using flat rate and % discounts because that would make it for all items and we want the 1st item to be at full price. Please help.

I set up a Promotion to be applicable for a subtotal over $30 (my cheapest product price), and limited it to a SINGLE USE. My question is will that be for 50% off a SINGLE ITEM or a SINGLE ORDER ? I want to be a single ITEM only. Please help.

What you want to achieve is possible with discount coupons which can be set up in a number of different ways. For instance you can create a coupon and limit it to be applicable only for a certain product and set it up for a single use.
