Free Shipping on Particular Product Variation

I am selling a book with 3 quantity options: Single, Set of 10 and Case. I have this set up to correctly change the price based on the selection using product options.

The problem comes with the shipping cost. Single and Set of 10 ship based on weight of the item and the customer's shipping method choice. Case is free shipping.

How do I do that?

(Sorry, just realized this posted in Misc instead of in Management area)

You can set up a new user-defined shipping method with some very special weight limit and then assign a weight to the variations or products that are eligible for free shipping, so that their weight fits into the weight limit of the 'Free shipping' user defined shipping method.

For example, if you want to ship for free only the book cases, but any smaller lots of your books need to have a weight based shipping cost even when they are mized with cases in one order (e.g. order consists of 1 book case and 1 set of ten of some product, and the case ships for free but set needs to be payed specially) - then you need to
1) have a weight limit of your Free shipping method ending at the very low weight (like 0 - 0.01 lbs) which is unlikely to fit some other product in your inventory
2) have a weight of 0 for book case variations and a real weight for other variations

With such setup, if an order consists only of book case lots, it will have a free shipping. If the order is mixed and there are smaller lots in it, they will trigger the weight based shipping calculation, but only for the lots other than book case (because book case lots have weight = 0).

----
On the other hand, if you want to offer free shipping for the mixed lots that just contain any book case lot and even the smaller lots bought together with it are also eligible for free shipping, then the logic of the setup is reverse:

1) set a very large weight limit of your Free shipping user defined method (like 100000000 - 10000000000 lbs) that is unlikely to appear in the orders that consist of smaller lots.

2) set the weight for all book case variations to 100000001 lbs

This way any order that consists of book case lot and anything else becomes eligible for free shipping.
