Can I use javascript to specify a product option?

I would like to allow a user to specify his/her selection of the 'colour' option for a product by clicking on a colour swatch image. If ECWID used an accessible HTML form, I'd so this using javascript 'on click' to set the value of the relevant field. Is there a way to do it via any of the ECWID APIs? They don't seem to address posting things to the cart.
