Is there a solution to this, or do I have to abandon the Wordpress plugin in favor of manual integration?

Yes, it is possible to add vertical categories easily to your Wordpress. They can be added to your blog`s sidebar.
- go to the Widgets page in your WP backend
- add the "Vertical Categories" widget and save the changes
