How To Become A Lifestyle Blogger And Make Money

13 min read

What is a Lifestyle Blog?

A lifestyle blog features posts about the daily life of its author. A lifestyle blogger can write about anything that interests them. The person writing the blog is the central theme, and anything that they find enjoyable or interesting is a suitable topic. This type of blogging allows you to create a personal brand and earn money.

Lifestyle blogging humanizes your brand, whether it’s personal or corporate, and lets your potential customers form a personal relationship with you. You can show the parts of your life that align with your brand identity, show yourself using your own products, talk about your inspiration for selling your product, and feature case studies and testimonials.

How Will a Lifestyle Blog Help You Make Money?

Customers want to buy from people that they like and trust. They also look for proof that other people like and trust you. An online store features your products, your blog features your personality and your relationship with your customers.  Your store and your blog work together to sell your products.

A blog is also a great way to drive warm traffic to your online store. You can research the keywords and key phrases that your customers search for in Google. When you write posts about those topics, you will appear in the search results and get free traffic back to your site! Your blog content will inspire trust in your visitors, and many of them will convert to customers (aka buy something from your store!).

How to Start a Lifestyle Blog

Choose a domain name

Ecwid allows you to start an online store without building a custom website or registering a domain. However, a custom domain name will make you look much more professional to potential customers. A .com domain name costs roughly $10-$15 per year. Choose a name that is easy to spell, easy to remember, and reflects your business identity.

Avoid the technical learning curve

You’re trying to sell products, not start a new career in web design. WordPress is the most popular blogging platform, but you don’t need to concern yourself with the dirty details of how to set it up. Instead, start an account with a managed WordPress hosting. They will set everything up for you and keep it running smoothly for a low monthly fee.

Select a WordPress theme

There are thousands of free and paid WordPress themes on the market. You want a theme that loads quickly and looks good on mobile devices as well as computer screens. If you need help picking a theme and setting up the look and feel of your new website, you can hire a freelancer from Upwork or Fiverr to help with this step.

Embed your Ecwid store in your new website

Ecwid provides a WordPress plugin that will automatically embed your online store into your new website. You won’t have to worry about coding anything. Your store will automatically look great, and your blog visitors will be able to find it easily. Ecwid provides great instructions to set it up.

How to Get Traffic to Your New Website

Search engine optimization 101

When you want to do a Google search, you type in keywords or phrases related to what you are looking for. Google shows you the sites that are the best match for your search. There is a complicated algorithm that decides which sites will be shown to you.

Search engine optimization frequently referred to as SEO, is the process that businesses use to make sure that they show up in their customer’s search results. This drives free traffic to your website.

A Highly Effective SEO Strategy To Increase Traffic

Use long-tail keywords for your blog posts

Primary keywords are broad keywords that usually have relatively high levels of search volume and competition. For example, a store that sells tennis equipment might use “tennis shoes” as a primary keyword. Primary keywords should be used on your website’s core pages, such as your homepage.

Long-tail keywords are usually phrases, and they are the best type of keyword to use in blog posts. Our tennis store might write a blog post using the long-tail keyword “the best women’s tennis shoes”. The best long-tail keywords have very low competition, which means that you can rank in Google and get traffic quickly.

LongTailPro is an easy-to-use keyword research tool that helps you identify the best topics for your blog posts. They have a 7-day free trial and offer a lot of free SEO training on their website. If you can’t afford a monthly subscription, the free trial will allow you to gather a lot of great post ideas to get your blog started.

SEO 101 for Online Merchants. Part 1: Keyword Research

Using an SEO plugin

Yoast is the best-known SEO plugin on the market. They offer a free version and a premium version. For bloggers on a budget, the free version is a great way to get started. The same Fiverr freelancer that helped you set up your theme can also install your plugins!

When you write your blog posts in WordPress, you enter the long tail keyword that you are targeting into the Yoast sidebar. Yoast will give you suggestions on how to optimize your content. You will know your post is ready to publish when the Yoast plugin displays a green light.

How to get backlinks

When other sites post links to your site, that is called a backlink. The number of backlinks that point to your homepage and blog posts affects your search rankings. Some people sell backlinking services where they promise to create a large number of backlinks to your site. However, if they create low-quality backlinks, it can actually hurt your rankings!

The best way to develop backlinks is to participate in the online community related to your niche. Read and comment on other blogger’s posts. Participate in discussion forums. Write guest posts on popular blogs. This approach takes time, but it builds your reputation along with your search position.

Tips & Tricks for Effective Posts

A picture is worth a thousand words

People are more likely to buy if they see candid pictures of the company owner and staff and casual pictures of the product being used in everyday life.  Make sure to include a picture in every blog article that you post!

Even though you’ll be using candid photography for your lifestyle blog, it’s important that you pay attention to the quality and style of your photos. You probably already have a brand guide that defines your company’s colors, fonts, message, etc. Developing a style guide for your photography is another aspect of branding.

Create a content calendar

The best blogs (or at least the most organized blogs) create a content calendar and stick to it! You can create consistency and quickly fill out your content calendar by choosing how many posts you want to publish each week. Then you assign a day of the week and a theme for each weekly post.

If you want to post three times a week, then you might want to create a content calendar where you post on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Once you’ve picked your blogging days, you assign a theme for each day. For example:

  • Mondays are a day for a candid personal photo and a short post about an aspect of your life that relates to your brand.
  • On Wednesday you share a photo of a customer with your product and post a medium-length post with a customer testimonial and product description.
  • On Fridays, you write a long post on a topic related to your brand identity or business processes.

You can use this simple content calendar example, or develop your own. The Content Factory has published a great guide on developing a content calendar, and offers a free template.

Always use calls to action

You are blogging because you want to make money. Drive the sale, don’t miss your opportunity to close. Always ask your readers to take a specific action at the end of each post. There are many different types of calls to action. Here are some examples:

  • You can direct them to a particular product in your store
  • You can send them to a product category
  • You can offer them something free or a discount to get them to sign up for your newsletter
  • You can direct them to follow you on social media

You can have multiple calls to action in one post. Don’t be shy. Tell your readers exactly what you want them to do. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by your conversion rates once you learn to ask for action.

Get Started Today if You Want to Make More Money

It takes time to set up a blog, do SEO research, create a content calendar, and build a base of published posts. Once the setup is complete, you still have to publish new content on a regular basis. The key to getting it done without feeling overwhelmed is to put scheduled blogging sessions on your calendar.

Marketing is an extremely important part of running a business. This is how you get your customers. You have to spend enough time and money on marketing to make sales. Business success equals marketing efforts. Schedule your blogging session and stick to them. It will pay off over time.

Organic search engine traffic is the most valuable form of traffic. It grows over time, along with your brand reputation and your sales. You have to keep paying for ads forever. Organic blogging traffic is free forever. Make the time investment to get your blog going and you will make steady long-term income in exchange for your efforts.
