I'm setting up a bookshop.

So ideally I would like people to be able to search on ISBN numbers and not on SKU, as most Dutch will not have a clue what SKU stands for.

No significant changes have to be made, just a fieldname change from "SKU" into "ISBN" and I'd be the happiest chappie in the world.
