I would like to offer tighter integration, however I don't see in the API how you can update shipment status and tracking information. Am I missing something?

No, unfortunately tracking codes and order statuses cannot be controlled even via import in Ecwid yet. But there's good news: our developers are currently working on a very special API that allows to update the orders (change their statuses or assign tracking codes) remotely. It will become available some time later, with one of the upcoming releases of Ecwid.
