Welcome to Ecwid !

Posted 25 September, 2009 by qetzal. Posted in Ecwid News, New Releases

from-blog Wow! Finally, the day has arrived for us to open Ecwid to the public. Ecwid one of the first 100% AJAX e-commerce platforms in the world. We believe that this is THE right approach to add e-commerce to your site. No more mess with PHP, no more hosting glitches, no more trouble getting the software look like it’s a fundamental part of your site.

We are not here to bash PHP: we have X-Cart and LiteCommerce, PHP products that have been the core of our business since 2001. We will continue to develop PHP e-commerce software. All of today’s best shopping carts are PHP based. PHP always was and still is the way to go if you have a bunch of geeks constantly modding your site. But what if you need just a store, nice and easy, working in minutes? That’s what Ecwid is for. And it is quite powerful, too.

We’ve spent a lot of time to ensure it is well designed and provides a smooth experience for store owners and end users alike. AJAX gives Ecwid a lightning-fast interface, drag and drop functionality, and ease of integration.

With X-Cart, we made sure that support and custom development services are always around when customers need it. With Ecwid, we focused on creating a product that would not require technical support at all. We focused on minimizing maintenance expenses, and we think we succeeded: Ecwid is … well, 100% free. Upgrades are seamless. Design alterations are just CSS changes.

But enough words. Just try it.

We would be happy to see Ecwid generating sales for you – and doing so immediately! We are looking for your feedback, so please join the forums and help Ecwid community grow! The Ecwid team will also be active on the forums. We can’t miss out on all the fun :)

Please mind that Ecwid is BETA and will stay in beta for quite a while. We just want to make it beta the Google way: we are going to improve it constantly.

Stay tuned, there will be more news in this blog. We’ll be adding more features. We’ll be adding more languages. We’ll be adding more widgets. We hope you’ll like it.

Welcome on board!

Blah, blah, blah, what about security? You don't seem to mention how easy a hacker might be able to mess up your store. This is the number one concern for us small business owners who don't have team of geeks. Please let us know how you've protected us (or left us out to dry).

Are you joking ? You can't compare security of closed source code SaaS application hosted in Amazon EC2 cloud and based on GWT (Google Web Toolkit) which in turn utilize Java to security of, say, PHP application @ some shared hosting.

Ecwid architecture eliminates a whole range of threats:

    • Closed code makes it more complex for hackers to find and analyze vulnerabilities.
    • SaaS makes it even harder as hacker does not have access to any type of code, even compiled one.
    • You can't have an old unpatched version of Ecwid, it's all upgraded centrally.
    • Amazon EC2 increases DDoS resistance.
    • Amazon EC2 ensures that all TCP ports that are not open explicitly are unavailable. You can't forget to configure your firewall.
    • Amazon EC2 security groups isolate Ecwid servers from other servers in the Cloud.
    • There is no third party with access to the servers, as opposed to usual web hosting. Less people, less problems.
    • Servers have no applications other than Ecwid, as opposed to wild uncontrollable mix of unpatched warez hosted at shared hosting.
    • Java eliminates a whole range of risks compared to C/C++ applications, such as buffer overflow risks.
    • Java eliminates a whole range of risks compared to PHP applications, such as problems with global variables.

The whole Ecwid thing is basically run by virtual machine code inside virtual Java machine, on a cluster of virtual cloud servers that are physically inside Amazon EC2 servers.

All in all, even Amazon gets DDoS'ed some times, and every application in the world might have a problem or vulnerability. Citibank, NASA and Pentagon - they all got hacked. Not only the Pentagon - even Twitter was down recently!!! So, everything a man has built another man can break. There are no 100% risk-free applications.

But Ecwid is by design way harder to hack than any PHP/ASP/C/C++ application. And as with any SaaS application, threat response is all handled by the team and is not left to "small business owners who don't have team of geeks".

    Cheers.

    Hi,
This plugin seems amazing, but for some reason it does not work in IE7, at least in my computer. I tried other versions of IE and it seems to be okay, but not IE7. Also it works well in Firefox.
Has anyone found a similar problem and a way to solve it?
    Thanks,
    Julio

Ecwid should work in IE7 without any issues.
So if you still experience this issue, please report it to our bugtracker: http://www.ecwid.com/bt and we
    will investigate the issue.

Awesome idea! Please, please, please integrate with Paypal Payments Pro and I'll make the switch to this cart right away. The current payment options are not that attractive.

Wow... very impressed. I will be certainly keeping an eager eye on this developement. I would love to use this solution, but I seem to have issues with it on the theme I am using. I use IE8 if that makes a difference also. The products show as only partial and to one side, the shopping bag possition is sitting over the products. Not complaining at all, as I love the concept of this being overly easy to use. A perfect solution for my clients. But here in Australia a highly trusted and prefered payment gateway is e-Path, another so easy product to use. Now, the combination of this gateway with ecwid would be a monster to contend with the big fellas out there.
Please have a look at the e-path integration, you will be amazed on how little needs to be done to actually integrate this solution. http://www.e-path.com.au
If this can be done, that would be my turning point and have this on my blogs and into my comunnity of 150 paid members... When I believe in something, there is no stopping me... :)

Thank you for your kind words, Ciaran.

    1. If Ecwid doesn't look as on our demo with your theme, it means that your site's CSS styles affect your Ecwid's look.
We already have some solutions for this issue. So please create a new thread on our forum, post the URL to your store and I will be glad to help.

    2. Please register your idea about e-Path in our ideas base and we will consider it. Thanks again!

Definitely agree re. the e-Path integration. Offline credit card processing is a facility a lot of our clients are requesting. e-Path offer a highly secure and professional service.
